HAMSA: Milestones

HAMSA unites people of conscience to support civil rights reformers in the Middle East and works on the ground in the region to inspire, train, and support young activists.

Building a Network

  • Recruiting over 4,000 young thinkers to enter our annual civil rights essay contest and awarding $30,000 in stipends and 150 book-prizes to outstanding essayists.

  • Mobilizing over 14,000 supporters to write letters calling for the release of jailed civil rights reformers.

  • Educating over 150 young activists from ten different countries at training workshops in Jordan, Egypt, Morocco, and the US.

Enhancing Public Awareness

  • Regularly publishing editorials in leading newspapers: Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, International Herald Tribune, and more.

  • Translating and distributing "The Montgomery Story" - a new Arabic version of a 50-year-old comic book on Martin Luther King's nonviolent struggle for basic civil rights.

  • Educating thousands of readers worldwide via an edgy bi-weekly civil rights e-alert, The CRIME Report, in Arabic and English.

Taking a Stand

  • Driving a "Protection Network" infrastructure to mobilize on behalf of jailed reformers, including the successful “Free Haleh” campaign for Haleh Esfandiari in Iran and "Free Fouad" campaign for Fouad Al-Farhan in Saudi Arabia.

  • Testifying to Congress' Human Rights Caucus on freedom of expression and bloggers under fire, as well as working with Congressional leaders from both sides of the aisle to pressure regimes to release imprisoned reformers.

  • Opening an office in the heart of the Middle East (Cairo) to provide direct support for regional reformers.
